The Story of Pekingese Haven,
My name is Diann Swanepoel, founder of Pekingese Haven in Kempton Park, South Africa, where broken little lions come to heal.
My story with Pekingese began when I was a baby. I lay in my crib, with a tiny dog named Chinkey beside me, watching, guarding, choosing me. No one told her to. She just did. That kind of love never left me.
Years later, it came back to me in a very different way.
Chloe was found on a rubble site, covered in dust, blending into the ground… almost invisible.
She was only found because someone noticed the slightest movement. Her body was shutting down, discarded because she could no longer produce puppies. We cleaned her. We held her. We showed her love when the world had thrown her away. She didn’t have long, but she fought to stay. In that short time…she changed everything.
Then came Misha.
A black bag, covered in tar, thrown away to die. When we found her, she was barely breathing, her tiny body trapped, her eyes filled with fear. We were told she wouldn’t make it. But we refused to give up. Through every breath…every moment…we fought for her! And Misha fought back. She survived.
And she is still with us today, a living reminder of why we never stop. After Chloe and Misha, the calls never stopped. Two became many. Our home became a refuge. Today, we care for around 75 rescued Pekingese and assist in other regions wherever possible. Every day, we get calls about dogs who have been abused, injured, neglected, discarded, or abandoned. Others are surrendered by families who can no longer cope.
And more often than not…we say yes. Even when we’re full. Even when we don’t know how we’ll afford it. It takes over R200,000 every month to keep going—food, medical care, shelter, and the people who care for them.
We can’t do this alone.
That’s why we created The Peke-Pack! Not just a way to donate, but a way to belong. A group of people who choose not to look away, who believe these dogs deserve dignity, safety, and love.
